Beware the expensive 8oz. draft beers. We ate here on New Year's Eve. We're glad we got here early (5:15pm) even though we called earlier and were told no reservations were necessary. 10 minutes after we arrived people were backed up for a while. The food was decent, but nothing very special. I had the sampler platter ($16 special tonight versus $23), and my wife had the catfish & shrimp platter ($17). Too expensive for the quantity and quality. We got two Sam Adams draft beers and they came in thick frosted mugs. What we know from experience is that these mugs hold 8-9oz. Combine that with the ice floating in the beer and it wasn't worth it. We got a bottled beer after that and poured it in the mug, just to see. The bottle was still 1/3 full. But the 8oz of Sam Adams still cost us $4 each. With so-so food, and a deceitful and overpriced draft beer, we won't be back.

Our options were slim while driving through town. Don's is basically a local Chilis. There is a Chilis across the street but I try to avoid Chilis if at all possible. It was very clean, with friendly wait staff. Lunch was a little over ten bucks a person and not that good. It wasn't bad but I can't imagine stopping here again. Ill stick to pre-packed PB&J's or maybe next time drive an hour out of the way for a lunch in New Orleans. Sometimes you win, in the case I didn't.

We enjoyed our visit to Don's Seafood Hut. We went on a Thursday night which turned out to be all you can eat fried catfish and shrimp night so they were very busy. Apparently, they have different specials on different nights which is good to know. We were greeted promptly and seated right away. Blake was our server and he did an excellent job. (and I tend to be picky about service) We ordered the Jacked up shrimp appetizer that the waiter recommended. very tasty!! The seafood gumbo and crawfish bisque are both delicious. I could go there again and just order a big bowl of soup, it was that good! We also had the crawfish dinner which includes crawfish bisque, broiled crawfish tails, crawfish stuffed mushrooms, crawfish au gratin, fried crawfish tails and crawfish etouffee, mashed potatoes and hushpuppies. We couldn't eat it all and took 1/2 of it home. Our server was very attentive. The restaurant was clean and a nice casual atmosphere. We will definitely go back!

Amazing!!! The food is ALWAYS fresh and full of flavor! The staff is very friendly. Management is top notch. This is a family environment. Love the fried catfish!!!

I just want to say, as a former cook in the restaurant. The kitchen is by far the most cleanest kitchen I've ever seen. They take pride in food preparation and proper handling of meats, seafood, and poultry. I still come to eat there and I haven't worked there in years.

The food here is bland and overpriced! I will never understand why so many people continue to go there.

I'm disappointed at the service and quality of the food. I grew up eating at Don's in Baton Rouge and have never been disappointed there. I've given the Denham location two tries and this will be my last visit...which is sad, because it's so close to home. Today (a Sunday), we came in at 2pm, after the lunch rush, for a meal before my son's soccer game at 3:30 right down the street. Food took an hour to come, and there were only 3 tables in the whole restaurant. Why? I asked the waitress several times. We had to scarf down our mediocre food and were still late to soccer. The service is horrendous. The food is overpriced for the portions and quality. $20 for a seafood platter that's the size of a child's plate is not something I'll be coming back for.

Holy crap!!! NEVER AGAIN will we go to Don's for crawfish! It was $34.99 for a 5 pound platter and 20.99 for a 3 pound platter!!! That's $7/lb, plus they charge EXTRA for potatoes and corn! What kind of crap is that?!? And our crawfish, corn and potatoes tasted so much like lemon that we couldn't eat the potatoes or corn that we paid extra for!!! I usually love Don's for the quality, I don't mind paying the price, but the quality of the crawfish were not worth it to me. They were tiny to boot! For any other seafood, I would recommend Don's, but not the crawfish! I was so disappointed! I love their boiled shrimp and I always get an order of hush puppies because theirs is the absolute best! I would normally give them a 5 because they are one of my favorites, but their crawfish prices were ridiculous! Corn and potatoes are part of the crawfish, Don's!!! Get onboard! That's just un-Louisianaian! And I don't care if that's not a word!

I can't give it 5 stars because I've had better. Don't get me wrong, it's good. It's not great. I usually get the grilled stuffed shrimp and those are really really delicious. They come with mashed potatoes and I always always get them to bring me some crawfish cream sauce to put on the potatoes. Mmmmm, it's so good. The alligator is better at Chimes. I picked up a seafood combo to go one time and I was so disappointed. I paid $19 and got 2 fried shrimp, 1 fried oyster, 1 stuffed shrimp, and 1 piece of catfish. Seriously???? My husband normally gets the seafood combo when we dine in and it's piled with seafood. We go to Don's in Denham Springs because we live very close to it, but I would much prefer Parrains or Mike Andersons.

Stopped here on our way to a hotel in Baton Rouge. I'd been seeing the billboards a lot and finally decided to try it. Meh, it was alright - nothing I'd really make a special trip for, but it was okay. The place was a bit too busy for us, to start with. It was a good 30 minute wait to get a table, but we were told it was "all-you-can-eat-boiled-shrimp" night so that explains a lot. Service was friendly, but very slow - and that could also be because of how busy it was. I had the stuffed catfish and my wife had the boiled shrimp. Both are rather high-priced considering the ingredients to produce the dishes. My catfish was VERY good, though. It was moist, flavorful and had an excellent stuffing of shrimp and crab. I enjoyed it. My wife's shrimp, however, was a little on the tough side and hard to peel because it had been clearly boiled too long. Don's also has a flirtation with SALT. The potatoes I had with my fish and my wife's shrimp were really over salted. So, I don't know that I'd ever come back to Don's but, for a first-time experience, it wasn't too bad.

The food was okay, everything, and I mean everything had red pepper It was really overpowering and I love spicy foods, the chicken, shrimp, catfish, hush puppies, all of it. The lemon did little to cut it, wont eat here again.

Lost a loyal customer. Was it worth it? I have enjoyed going to Don's In BR for years and happy to add the Denham Springs location to our favorite places. UNFORTUNATELY, after a bad experience last week, and even calls to management I have not helped. We won't go back. We had gone for dinner on Thursday night and our waitress made a mistake of ringing someone else's check on our debt card. Realizing it, she did void it and reran our card for our less expensive dinner. If you run a card too many times too close together, the bank kicks it and puts a hold on the card. Thankfully, we had a different card and we paid. HOWEVER, the debt has remained on our other card. I understand it take time to fall off, etc., but meanwhile, we are out that money. Suppose that was all the money we had and it has taken this long to get it straight? I called and Austin, (the manager) told me he would make it right, and I needed to call after 4PM for the front of store management. I waited till 9 that night and called Jess. She was quick to tell me it would fall off, that it was not their fault it took so long but the bank's problem. I reminded her it was the waitress that ran it wrong to begin with after she kept insisting it was my problem with my bank. While loving the food, I am still not happy I am lacking use of my money, since last Thursday. Jess was rude and disrespectful and frankly, I don't need it. It is now Monday, and the hold on my account has not dropped off and it is four days after the fact. Suppose I took $40 from your bank account? Would you appreciate it? Thankfully, we were paid Friday, but what if I had needed that money for medicine? You have "won" the battle of being rude and not being the least bit helpful, but you have lost a long time faithful customer. Was it worth it? My point is Don's Hut in Denham Springs, is not the family friendly place they portrait. It is all about the "almighty dollar" as it is with other places in town. They do not respect you as a person or your loyalty as a regular customer. I can go to any restaurant and get good food in BR, but I chose to go to Don's. I will not be choosing them again.

  • Kara Y.

This place definitely has ups and downs. The crabmeat au gratin is very good, and we frequently pick up steaks from there. I find it strange for any place to not have baked potatoes as a side when they serve steaks. We have gone there and gotten the steak a few times, and they usually are very good, but the last time we went they were just raw. Luckily, the manager was very understanding and actually mailed us a gift card to come back (we had gotten them to-go). This was well received from us since we didn't even show them the way the steaks looked or anything like that. Not as good as the original Don's on Airline, but not bad for a seafood restaurant near Walker, either.

We ate the gumbo, stuffed shrimp, and seafood ravioli tonight. Food was outstanding, the environment was very relaxing (we've been driving all day), and our waitress was pleasant. We will definitely stop by again on our way home from Texas!!

The seafood was not all that, especially for the price we paid. My wife got the seafood platter and was disappointed with it, we were very happy to discover that it was on special that night (Tuesday evenings). The only reason we went there was because they had boiled crawfish for $1.99 a pound and they were hard to peel and not that good. To end on a positive note the draft beer was great served in a frosty mug and they were 2 for 1. I can also add that the service and atmosphere was good.

My family and I have been dining at Don's Seafood's locations for years. The Denham Springs location is in a great location, parking lot is always full and wait staff very friendly and efficient. My favorites are the seafood gumbo, seafood salad, grilled oysters and crabmeat au gratin.

Food is good. I am here on a Tuesday so the Seafood Platter is the special for $16.99. While it took a little bit to get my food it was worth the wait, traveling on business so I had nothing else to do. Every item was good. The stuffed crab & shrimp were so good, I am going to ask for the recipe! The service needs improvement. Please just refill my tea, I do not need threes empty glass on the table. Also for a place that has their own bottled hot sauces and seasonings, it seems odd the tartar sauce & cocktail sauce is served on little plastic to go cups. No waitress in sight & I am out of tea. Yes, I am thirsty tonight! Stop if you are in town, you should like it.

Absolutely wonderful food, and service! We had the Seafood Platter and Catfish with Red Beans and Rice with the best hush puppies ever! We make it a point to stop on every year on our way to Florida and it's always a highlight. Love, love, love it!!

Don's offer casual dining with consistenly good seafood. The service at this particular location is really good - very attentive, almost to a fault, but the food was out promptly, which I thoroughly appreciate. Here are my recommendations: the jacked up shrimp appetizer, first, the name hooks me, but if that's not enough for you, this little treasure has about six shrimp swimming in bubbling cheese with bacon and jalapenos -YUM! The seafood gumbo is pretty good, too. I have enjoyed grilled snapper (usually fish of the day) and redfish...not too spicy, but panfried nicely. I usually pair my fish with the steamed veggies, but they have a good selection of sides if squash isn't your thing. The salads are pretty good and pretty large; I would go with the seafood salad. My favorite thing about this particular location is the music selection. I spent about an hour and ten minutes at lunch the other day and was treated to soul, 80's pop and Motown's greatest hits - not exactly what you would expect in Denham Springs, but welcomed tunes to my ears nonetheless!

  • Patrick B.

Very disappointed. Dons was once a great name in seafood in the BR area. I felt like I was being nickeled-and-domed, with nearly everything charged separately. Food was ok, but the way it was prepared hid the flavor of the fish, making it impossible to tell if I had redfish or something else. Service was barely average, even though we were there early in the middle of the week.

It was pretty good seafood but I got the feeling in Baton Rouge there is better. Portions are big but tasty. It is a busy place it seems as well. Staff was fine but a bit of a wait on the food but nothing terrible. Great seafood selection so pretty much if it swims you can eat it here...

We had dinner here tonight. We were VERY pleased with the service and food. We had raw oysters for appetizer. They were fresh and most of them were really good sized. My husband and son shared the captains platter and a cup of gumbo. They had more than enough food and it was all very good. I had a meal that was fried cheese ravioli with a crawfish sauce. It wasn't greasy at all. It was absolutely delicious! Definitely recommend this place!

I usually not a big fan of chain restaurants but this one is ok in my books. First of all, I LOVE the local Abita Amber and it was 2 for 1 night - yeah for me! My first time in this part of Louisiana so of course I ordered the oysters on the half shell... they were so good and I even shared! The alligator bites were spice and scrumptious. Can't get gator where I'm from. Lastly it was tough to choose an entrée and so I opted for the Chicken and Andouille Sausage Gumbo. It was good in my books! Lots of things to choose from on this menu. Seemed to be a popular restaurant in this area.

My wife and I went to Don's for dinner Friday night while staying the night at a nearby hotel. The service was prompt and courteous and the food was excellent. We waited about 15 minutes for a table...not unexpected for a seafood restaurant on a Friday night during Lent. My one star review is solely because there seems to be a lack of management supervision, and "family friendly" is a misrepresentation. There is a bar in the restaurant that is not at all separated from the dining area. This would not usually be a problem, but we were seated all the way to the back in a booth by the end of the bar. Seated in the two last seats at the bar were two extremely drunk, extremely loud, foul mouthed individuals. And standing at the end of the bar was a third loud drunk, who I suspect may have been an employee since he repeatedly walked behind the bar and helped himself to various things. It was impossible to have a conversation with these offensive loud-mouths a few feet away. Had the kids been with us, we would have had a confrontation with management. Instead, we chose to eat quickly, pay the check and leave. We pass through Denham Springs frequently and it's a good stopping point, but we will not be visiting this Don's again, and I will hesitate to visit their other locations in the future.

I stopped in here to rest on my long ride back to Houston. I lived.in Baton Rouge before moving to Houston, but I never had a chance to visit this Don's location. It is really nice on the inside, but the parking lot is a little tight. It took a minute for me to be seated as the hostess was missing, but someone told her there were people at the door and she showed up. She let me sit whoever I wanted which was nice. I ordered the seafood platter and it was ok. My etoufee had been sitting for awhile as the rice was dried out. My stuffed shrimp and catfish were pretty good. It wasnt worth $22.00, but it wasn't too bad.

Wow! Went here for the 1st time, and i was pleased with everything. I had the captains or fishermans or whatever platter... Anyway it was tuesday and it was the special of the night... Also had a cup of seafood gumbo, and we shared raw oysters for an appetizer. Seafood gumbo came out first.., it was great, very rich and full of flavor. The oysters came out after that, we had some large ones and one small one, but they were good!.... My platter...forgot the name of it...., came out and my son and i split it... Fried shrimp and catfish were ok.., nothing special , the stuffed shrimp and crab were delicious....., they were the star of the dish.. Fried oyster tasted good too. Overall everything was good and better than expected. I wish this place was close to home.... I'm in the hotel now and stuffed....

I went here for lunch while in town to meet a Great Aunt I have never met in my life. Right off the bat I was impressed by the waiters southern hospitality. He didn't rush us or bother us for taking FOREVER to order and also being at his table for hours. He was super polite the entire time and very attentive. The refills didn't stop coming even after the check. The food was great! Certainly higher than my expectations for a local chain. The oysters on the half shell were big and tasty. They were very fresh. The hush puppies were delicious. We both got the seafood gumbo and it was awesome! It certainly fulfilled my gumbo craving. I would definitely come back to Dons next time I am in town. I just wish I had saved room for dessert!

Had the seafood platter. It was a good price because we went on Tuesday night and it was $17.99. We had fried mushrooms for an appetizer. They were served with ranch dressing for dipping. So good. The seafood platter was delicious! The only thing that could have been better was the shrimp étouffée... Shrimp tasted too much like iodine and way too much rice for the amount of sauce. Stuffed crab and shrimp were the best I've ever tasted. Our waiter, Donnie, was very attentive, and friendly but not intrusive. Our food came out quickly and done just right. We enjoyed the meal and had some left to bring home. We were very satisfied and will surely go again. We would definitely recommend Don's in Denham Springs. The only reason I rated four stars instead of five was because of the shrimp étouffée.

I'll probably never return. The prices are too high for the vomit worthy food they serve. Our waitress wasn't bad, she didn't seem very bright but she was nice enough. Food was so bad though...so so bad.

Have to update... the Red Beans and Catfish is good EXCEPT the Catfish has gotten too thin. No meat. But if you like the Menadorfs ultra thin catfish then this is for you. Not me!

Food was good but for the prices I was expecting more. Staff was nice but the whole experience could of been better. Took a while to get our appetizer and when we did the food came out right after. So... not a big fan sorry.

After leaving my previous review for Don's seafood in Denham Springs, I was contacted by a manager. We spoke by phone and I was able to explain my frustration to him. He asked for a chance to redeem himself and promised to send a gift card for my entire office. We received the gift card today and discovered a bit of lagniappe, a card for a free dessert! I didn't inform the staff of my deal with their boss as I didn't want special treatment. The restaurant was fairly busy, yet the service was on point! We didn't have to wait for anything. We got the jacked up shrimp appetizer, which was great as always. I had the boiled shrimp, which maybe the best I've had. The shrimp pealed very easily and had great flavor, I prefer a bit more spice but I like it hot! My only complaint would be that the turtle cheese cake we split isn't on my diet... It was worth the cheat day for sure though. We will definitely return.

Killed our appetizer ...hard to feel like eating after a spill at the next table was moped up with dirty water that smelled awful!!!! I ordered the seafood gumbo but it was horribly salty. Have always had good food at Dons. First time eating at this one. Not sure I will be back. Waitress was nice though. Hubs couldn't get cocktail sauce even though we asked twice for it. I couldn't get a coke refill which I REALLY needed to wash down the salt. Yulk!

Food was great! We tried boudin balls for the first time ever and I must say We were quite pleased. They were delicious! My husband had the chicken and andouille gumbo and I had the 1/2 fried shrimp 1/2 étouffée. We had Kendall as our waitress, she was very helpful in our decision making and very pleasant.
